Making Soft Drinks At Home

A generic 2 liter bottle of cola.

It's been a little while since I posted a video, so thought I'd pass along this tip on how you can make your own soda or pop or whatever you call it where you live.  It's not going to be a huge money saver unless you drink a lot of pop at your household.  We happen to drink quite a bit of the stuff and I figure I save about $25-$30/month by making my own.  There are lots of flavors to choose from, but my favs are the cola & Country Time lemonade while my son likes the faux Mt. Dew and hubby likes the root beer. Now before you start preaching how bad soda pop is for a body, the syrup I purchase is sweetened partly with aspartame & has no high-fructose corn syrup, so let's not start judging.  All that and you'll be saving the landfills from all those plastic bottles.  Surely that's something to feel good about. :-D

  1. Could you share how much it cost to make the equivalent to a 2 liter bottle? I keep looking at these, but haven't figured out if it would save us money or not.

You should check out this page on how to make soda at home without the appliance. http://www.alpharubicon.com/kids/makesoda.html

    1. Thanks for stopping by Callie! I've run the numbers and this is what I've come up with as far as store bought vs Soda Stream.

I buy 10 bottles of syrup online every month. Every 10th bottle is free, plus I use a coupon code I found out there on the www ("FREEMIX" I believe is the code). So right off the bat, I'm getting 2 bottles of syrup for free which more than covers the shipping cost, which isn't that bad to begin with. Because I buy online from SS, I also earn reward points that I can apply toward my purchase for add'l dollars off.

A bottle of syrup will make 12 liters of soda. 10 syrups=120 ltrs (or 60 2 ltrs).
My last SS bill for 10 bottles of syrup was about $41.00
The cost to get the CO2 tanks filled was $8.00 at a local sporting goods store.
That brings my total soda bill to $48.00 for the month.

I can buy 2 ltr bottles of soda at Dollar General for $1.35
      60 2-ltr bottles @ $1.35 = $81.00/month

      Total Savings=$33.00/month

The numbers will fluctuate a little depending on how many reward points I have accumulated, but I still save at least $25+ every month.

Yes, we do guzzle a lot of soda. lol

I also checked out the link you gave me. It's a good alternative, but I'm just too lazy to do all that. hahaha

  2. The price of the CO2 cartridges is what's keeping me from getting one. I can see where you are definitely saving money by getting them refilled instead of buying new ones. I've been looking up syrup recipes online and there are a ton of them available if I decided to get really cheap and make my own. Of course it wouldn't taste like Coke or Pepsi, but I'm okay with that. I think I just like having the carbonation in my drinks.

I've had that link bookmarked for at least 6 months and still haven't tried it yet. One of these days I'll get around to having my son do it. LOL

    1. You're right about those SS carbonation tanks/refills. That has to be a HUGE money maker for them, but not from me. If you do decide to go this route, buy a Soda Mod and they will include 1 12oz CO2 paintball tank with your order. In addition I bought 2 20 oz paintball tanks so when I'm on my last tank, I take the 2 empties to the sporting goods store to get refilled.

A tip I got from other SS users is if you only use 4/5 of a cap of cola syrup, and press the carbonation button for 6 'buzzes', it comes pretty close to Coke. Not exactly, but close enough for saving that kind of money. ;-)
